Thanks so much for the link. When I wrote the Baja article for Mexicana I learned about the Monterey California cancel but could not find an image. It is extreamly rare. Only San Antonio in Baja and Monterrey in Alta California had cancelation devices made before stamps were introduced.
Excellent study!

Walske and Frajola's recently published Mails of the Westward Expansion is now available on line.  See http://www.rfrajola.com/mwe/mwe.htm  The chapter dealing with California discusses briefly the mails under the Mexican period and illustrates an 1834 cover from Monterey California to San Diego with a nice FRANCO ALTA CALIFORNIA stamp.   See  http://www.rfrajola.com/mwe/C4.pdf
