Hi! It is probably a little late by now but the Mexicana article by Mr Stout that you are  talking about is on April 2001.

Doug Stout issued a listing of all the markings he had recorded but I cannot find it unfortunately

I so rarely even pay any attention to these type marks. I think I am like most collectors, if I don't know what or who it stands for I have little interest in something like this mark. There were some of these marking listed in Mexicana a couple years ago. Maybe it will be in there.

The attached scan shows the ''owners mark'' on the back of a 50c 1868 Hidalgo.
The mark appears to be a simple square. Does anybody recognize who used to use this mark.  I suspect the stamp itself is a forgery - one of the 50c reprints with forged cancel, so I'm curious who might have marked the back of this.
