Dear Farley,
Many, many thanks. That is what I call a well-researched reply.
Very thorough and exactly what I wanted to know.
It reminded me of when I was a teenager and my brother and I were researching our family a few hundred years ago in the Society of Genealogists in London.
Now of course it is all on computer.
spuff.

  AUGSPURG RIEKE & C.a / GUADALAJARA
Using retroreveal.org (see image) I could make out RIEKE & C.a  Then, searching Google, I ultimately found AUGSPURG RIEKE & Cia.  I found 4 references to that business in Google, from 1860-1872.  I then searched “AUGSPURG RIEKE” in http://www.hndm.unam.mx/, which allows full text search of 600 plus Mexican newspapers, and found 65 references from 1855-1994.

Retroreveal is a wonderful site that produces numerous versions of a color image showing different color separations and often lets you read things that are not readable otherwise.
