Hi James
This is a trial printing for the district/year numbers, usually found on thin figures stamps. You can find them with all kind of numbers, sometimes even several (different) per stamp.

1868 Thin Figure 01 68 ?
« Reply #1 on: November 01, 2016, 02:15:48 PM »
 Hi folks,

I recently obtained this 1868 Scott 46 Thin Figure Hidalgo Imperf with a pen cancel on which the overprint appears to 01  68.  The 01 puzzles me.  I don't recall seeing a leading 0 before.

Heath and Stout, on their table on page 137, show the Imperf 1  68 Mexico marked with a single cross which "Indicates a reported and probable item yet no rarity will be assigned".

My question for those of you, who would care to weigh in, is:  Is this rascal an Imperf 1  68 or is it something else?

James
